If you have a job, save an emergency unemployment account which has enough money for at least 6 months living. And put into this fund every payday no matter what. If you reach the 6 months, then try to 12 months.

    Redo your resume every year.

Excellent idea Miz Pat! Along the same line of thinking is to put away a food storage. Start small at first, just a three-day emergency supply. Then add to your supply to make it last a full week, then a month, and so on, until you have a full one-year supply of the everyday things you use in your life.

Oooh John I didn't think of that. I generally have a stocked freezer (with frozen butter), and a pantry with lots of stuff, including dried milk and sterno for heating things if it gets bad. I also buy paper goods on sale and stuff them away in a closet.

Right now since I am trying to pay off debt to ex-spouse, I have been trying to use the stock from the freezer and lower my grocery bills. It works pretty well. I have substantially reduced my grocery bills from 70 a week to more like $25 to $40 a week.

We have a three month emergency fund right now and are working on getting it up to six months and more. As for food, we have about 9 months worth and its great having that security. Earning a little extra income on the side helps, too. As an entry on another blog suggested, scour Craigslist for people looking for someone to shovel snow, clean out gutters, wrap presents, run errands, etc. House cleaning services are popular this time of year. So are party planning services. And there's always pizza delivery. Smile
